Town Fair Road Race 5K - SHS Indoor Track Fundraiser
July 2, 2010 - Dan Crowley, Enterprise Newspapers
Once again this year the Sandwich Town Fair Road Race will benefit the Sandwich High School Indoor Track team. Members of the SHS cross-country and indoor and spring track teams will run in the July 10 event to raise funds to support the indoor program. According to organizers there will be t-shirts for the first 100 entries and gift bags for the first 200 runners, as well as prizes and medals for top finishers in each age group. There will be music, mini-massages and gait analysis at the finish line. The Sandwich High Indoor track team averages approximately 70 student-athletes each season and the event is their largest fundraiser of the year.
"Almost all of our cross-country and track team runners will participate in some form, whether running the 5K distance or being at water stations or helping out at finish line with crowd management," Coach Steve Infascelli said "Our indoor program will be in its fifth year this winter. Last year we were partially funded by the school. This is a great opportunity for people to say, I had a chance to help a great team of young athletes; I directly gave them the opportunity to compete at the highest level of competition. That can be extremely rewarding, and empowering. We're always looking for help and we'll always welcome an extending hand. I hope the people who have graciously made donations to this team realize their importance and how extremely thankful we are for their kindness."
"It means a lot," SHS boys' varsity cross-country team senior captain Gavin Jones said of the community participation in the event. "We all love to run and we can't do it without funding. We'd love it if everybody would come out and help support our indoor team."
The group heading up the event for the SHS Indoor team are Jana Lefavor along with Sarah Regan, Cindy Travers, Jodi Starck, Elaine Warren, Mary Kelly and Kristine Whaples.
"They all make up our committee," Coach Infascelli noted. "They are incredible people and I love them dearly. Without them this program would be lost."
The race begins at Sandwich High School at 10 AM. Registration forms and more information is available at www.sandwichindoortrack.org. There is a discount for registrations received by July 3.

Fundraising Brings Members Of Track Team Together

For members of the Sandwich High School indoor track team, the work required for a successful season begins before they run their first lap.
That is because, like participants in the high school’s other unfunded sports squads, members of the track team are responsible for raising the money to cover all the costs associated with their sports.
Though the school committee last month approved a plan that would help partially fund indoor track, wrestling, and sailing, and fully fund the girls’ hockey team, the track team will still be on the hook to raise between $10,000 and $15,000 this year to help pay for officials, travel, league dues, coaching salaries, and the right to the use the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, where their meets are held.
Before this season began, members of the track team raised $960 toward their cause by holding a raffle for a yard cleanup.
Members of the team and their coach Steven C. Infascelli sold tickets, and then spent last Sunday afternoon cleaning up the winner’s yard.
It was the second year in a row that the track team has held the yard cleanup raffle.
Members of the team also raise money by working at concession stands during school sporting events and organize a road race held the same weekend as the Town Fair in July.
Rather than complaining about the extra effort they have to put in to keep their sport afloat, members of the team say they appreciate the extra challenge.
On Wednesday afternoon before warming up for practice, members of the team said all the fundraising brings them closer and makes every race that much more special.
“It kind of builds a camaraderie among the team members,” senior Jason R. LeFavor said. “We all know we have to work extra hard to get on the field.”
Events like the yard cleanup are also kind of fun, Jason said.
The extra work does have a way of weeding out those runners who really are not interested in giving the team their all.
“It shows who’s really dedicated,” senior Jameson D. Goins said.
Mr. Infascelli, who has coached the winter team for four years, agreed.
He said his athletes realize that participating in sports is ultimately something they have to earn, and that each race they run is the result of hard work, both on and off the track.
Mr. Infascelli is responsible for 70 runners who take part in throwing, jumping, sprinting, and distance running events and he said, in a less cash-strapped district, he would have a few assistant coaches to help him oversee the many athletes of various disciplines.
That is the hardest part of the job, he admitted.
Mr. Infascelli said that being the sole coach of a squad with so many athletes has also forced him to put extra trust in his captains, and they have rewarded him with the efforts in leading the team.
“I rely on my captains so much,” he said. “I’ve been preparing my seniors for this responsibility for the last four years, and now they really have become like my assistant coaches.”
Mr. Infascelli said parents Patty Ellis, Mary Kelly, and Jana LeFavor have played a major role in planning the fundraisers. It was Ms. Ellis who was responsible for organizing the yard cleanup.
Without them, the team would not be able to raise nearly as much money as they do.
“They’re the heart and soul of the operation,” he said, before taking a moment to reconsider. “Actually, they’re the brains of the operation. The runners, they’re the heart and soul of this.”
